Tooth replacement

A crown is a prosthetic tooth designed by a dentist and created by a lab technician. It is custom designed to fit on top of the damaged or discoloured tooth. It covers the entire tooth, starting at the gum line.

Dental bridge is used to replace missing teeth by bridging the gap between two remaining teeth and is not removable by the patient.

Crowns and bridges – ceramic fused to metal

Traditionally, crowns and bridges are made of a metal base (can be ordinary metal or noble metal) and porcelain fused on top. The porcelain layer resembles real teeth and covers the metal structure. Crowns are used when the damaged tooth may be impossible to restore to its correct form using fillings, inlays or onlays. Crowns are also used to support dental bridges. To prepare the tooth, the dentist drills some tooth and core away, takes an impression and records the shape and shade of the teeth before writing a prescription for the dental lab to follow. A temporary crown is placed on the tooth until the final one is ready. The last step is when the permanent crown is cemented over the tooth.

Bridges are used when several neighbouring teeth need replacement. The procedure is similar to when a crown is fitted, the teeth that will hold the bridge will be prepared and a custom made bridge is fixed to them.

Crowns and bridges – without metal

The use of all-porcelain/ceramic crowns and bridges represents the highest technology in 21st century cosmetic dentistry. Dental structures of this kind are very aesthetic, extremely precise and therefore more durable than previous applications. With ceramic crowns and bridges, aluminium oxid or circonium oxid is used, a substance that have similar mechanical properties to metal.

Partial removable denture

Denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. Partial denture is suitable for those who have some natural teeth remaining. The denture fills the gaps between these teeth and prevents them from changing position. It is fixed to the remaining teeth with precision attachment screws that can be taken out by the patient easily.

Full removable denture

Full denture is recommended to those who have lost most or all of their teeth. The process required to have dentures fitted is more complex than people think. First an initial diagnosis is carried out, an impression and wax bite are made to determine proper jaw position. Then, the dentist will try it in the patient’s mouth to assure proper colour, shape and fit. Only after these steps the final denture is fitted.
