Scar revision surgery

Lots of scars that appear large and unattractive at first may become less noticeable with time and some of them can be treated with steroids to relieve symptoms such as tenderness and itching. For these reasons, we recommend waiting a year or more after an injury or surgery before you decide to have scar revision.

Scar revision surgery can take from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete depending on the extent of the procedure. It is usually performed under local anaesthetic, but it is possible to do it under general anaesthesia, as well. There are various techniques involved in the surgical procedure of scar revision, which our experienced surgeons are experts at. Scar revision surgery is normally safe, there is always the possibility of complications. These may include infection, bleeding, a reaction to the anesthesia, or the recurrence of an unsightly scar.

You can expect to feel some discomfort after scar revision surgery. Some swelling, bruising and redness are normal reactions. It is important for you to follow your surgeon's after care recommendations. The sutures will be removed within days after the surgery, your skin needs time to heal. Our surgeons generally insist on decreased activity after surgery, using cold compresses to reduce swelling, and avoiding any activity that places undue stress on the area of the incision. It is important to remember that scar tissues require a year or more to fully heal and achieve maximum improved appearance.
